Free Your Voice, Release the Weight with EFT Tapping

If your sluggish thyroid condition makes it hard to lose weight, you’re probably taking important self-care steps to help that butterfly gland flutter more vigorously.

Perhaps you’ve cut out certain foods like gluten, dairy, and soy. Maybe you’re lightening up your stress load, taking targeted supplements, and/or making a point to stay active.

All of these are excellent actions. Now let’s add one more that you might not have considered: Speaking your truth.

Your thyroid is the messenger by which, quite literally, every cell in your body hears what you say. So if you (like many women) withhold your truth in order to avoid conflict in your relationships, your metabolism is quite possibly paying the price.

Emotional Freedom Techniques

I’m not an expert on thyroid health, but I do help health-conscious women heal the emotional issues behind hypothyroidism and other conditions that make excess weight difficult to lose. I do this by using a powerful self-help tool called Emotional Freedom Techniques (also known as EFT, or EFT Tapping), which uses fingertip tapping on acupuncture points to circuit-break the electromagnetic signals connected to stressful circumstances.


Let me tell you a story about a client of mine whose belly fat quickly melted away, simply by learning to speak what was on her mind.

Priya (not her real name) had been diagnosed with hypothyroidism at age nine. At that time, she was being sexually and emotionally abused by both her father and her sister, who often told her she was stupid and had nothing worthwhile to say.

Not surprisingly, Priya learned, in her words, how to “play dumb” and “just go along” in order to survive.

At age 15, after her mother’s sudden death, Priya’s family immigrated to the United States from India. As she transitioned from her turbulent adolescence into adulthood, Priya sought to soothe the pain of her multiple traumas with pasta, pizza, ice cream, and wine.

In our Tapping work together, Priya and I journeyed back to those original episodes of abuse in which she felt abandoned, unworthy, and hopeless. As Priya used Tapping to gradually release the distressing emotions and negative beliefs connected with those traumas, she was able to quell her bingeing behaviors and bid her so-called “treats” a final farewell.

Priya also discovered a mighty voice inside her that spontaneously roared a life-changing message to her in-laws one night.


A Mighty Voice

Here, in her words, is what happened:

“We were sitting at the table eating dinner. Because of my mother in-law’s upbringing, she will eat three-day-old food so that it doesn’t get wasted. And I appreciate that. However, her thinking has been, ‘You work really hard, you get fresh food. I don’t work as hard, I can eat stale food.’ My two-year-old daughter is at the dinner table with us. She’s extremely impressionable right now. She might not say anything, but she’s taking it all in. 

“Seeing that my mother-in-law, the eldest woman in our home, is succumbing to this whole ‘I-am-second’ thinking made me flip. I went off on everyone at the table. I raised my voice and said,

‘Why do you think that way? Why do you see yourself second? You are the lady of the house! You are divine! What impression do you leave on my daughter with this behavior? She will pick up on these little cues and do the same thing growing up. I need you to see yourself first! No more seeing yourself second! I need you to eat fresh food with us! Plus, there are lots of homeless people in this town who would be happy to eat delicious leftover Indian food made with love.’ 

“Later, when I was bouncing my daughter to sleep, I realized I needed to apologize for raising my voice to my mother-in-law. A few minutes later, she came to my room.

“I said, ‘I’m sorry for raising my voice. I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings.’

“For the first time ever, she gave me a hug and a kiss. She does not show affection physically. That was huge for her. That was when I knew she was not upset with what I said, but understood where I was coming from as a mother and as a woman.

“For the first time in my life, I felt like I let her into my heart. We’ve had our differences in the past, and I’ve been protecting my heart in fear of her disapproval. But truly, my in-laws have been there for me since my daughter’s birth and have been super supportive of everything.

“As soon as I dropped my guard and let her into my heart, I also dropped physical weight around my stomach. In less than 24 hours my husband could see the change. One night, as we were lying in bed, he said, ‘Honey, your belly fat is gone. Your stomach muscles are showing.’

“I really get it now that my body weight has been emotional baggage more than anything else.”
