Radiance Rituals from a ‘Thyroid Yoga®’ Goddess

I never thought of myself as beautiful, despite the fact that my mom always told me that I was (as moms often do). I was ridiculed and bullied throughout my school years for my long nose, puffy lips, and wild red hair. In gym class I was always picked last and boys never had crushes on me. I didn’t kiss a boy until I was 18.

Beauty was something I neither understood or felt worthy of until I was nearly 30 years old. My early experiences, along with a string of toxic relationships left me petrified to speak my truth, both in relationships and business partnerships. It took getting very sick with an autoimmune thyroid condition due to chronic stress, fatigue, binge drinking, and emotional eating, to learn the true meaning of beauty.

Yoga found me in 2008 and in 2011 I quit a highly stressful corporate job in finance and became a yoga and meditation teacher. But it was when I moved from NYC to California in 2015, that a tremendous inner shift occurred. I rediscovered my femininity, my sensuality, and my body, which was longing for me to appreciate and respect her. I realized I was the only one who could decide whether I was beautiful – not social media, not a man, not society. And I realized that yes, I was worthy of feeling sexy, illuminated, and full of life.

The 5 Radiance Rituals below are what empowered me to not only transform, but heal. I am sharing them with you, to help you shine in all areas of your life (because how you show up in one is how you show up everywhere else).

Rituals are habits made holy.

We all have moments where we don’t feel good about the way we look. Our thoughts themselves can be ‘unattractive.’ I create beauty serums and oils that I adore and infuse with love, but I’m going to share a secret with you: the most potent piece of beauty technology doesn’t cost a dime.

Radiance is cultivated through spiritual practice and presence. How you take care of your inner landscape radiates to your outer landscape. When you embody your spirit and are present, it can be felt across a room. These rituals require only your mindful awareness.

1. Start the Day with an Attitude of Gratitude

Thinking a few positively grateful thoughts upon waking can shape your entire day, but I like to take this practice to the next level, by doing a grateful body scan in front of the mirror. (Bonus points if you go completely in the buff.)

Make a point to look directly into your eyes, in addition to scanning the rest of your body. Look beyond just the physical when naming what you are thankful for. Here’s an example:

“I love my bright blue eyes. Thank you for these eyes that give me vision, enabling me to be seen, and to see others and how I can serve them.”

Doing this regularly makes it easier for me to look myself in the face, and to cherish what I see rather than criticizing. After years of self-loathing, this has been one of the most powerful healing practices I’ve ever done.

2.  Get Moving

Like you, I have thoughts spinning in my head every day, and sometimes they aren’t at all positive or beneficial. Becoming a yoga teacher doesn’t exempt me from this reality of being human.

I have learned that releasing energy is a vital part of maintaining and enhancing beauty.

I’m going to share with you one of the most effective beautifying practices I learned from my kundalini yoga teacher, Guru Jagat, whose celebrity clients also include Alicia Keys and Goldie Hawn.

A daily practice of 3 minutes of rapid cat-cow with powerful breathing through your nose will yield plumper, firmer skin. With my background and education in biomedical engineering, I can tell you that there is real science behind this. Collagen production relies in part on cerebrospinal fluid, and this practice will get that fluid moving. This is the serum beauty scientists are feverishly looking for. But you don’t have to wait for a lab to come out with a sub-par proxy.

Please Note: This is a vigorous exercise so be sure to honor what your body’s needs are, starting slowly and gently, and working your way up as appropriate for you.

Anytime you feel stuck in your personal space, take a moment to do this. You’ll feel instantly clear and radiant.

3. Adorn Your Senses

Whether through the use of essential oils, a bouquet of fresh herbs and flowers, a favorite color of clothing, or some beloved music, adorning our senses and nourishing them with beauty, is life-giving and life-affirming.

It’s making a statement: “I’m grateful to take care of myself because I care about myself.”

Here’s an example: We all have parts of our day and our business that aren’t our favorite things – for me that is bookkeeping. To make it feel more elevated and not as draining, I make a ritual of adorning myself in essential oils – a signature bookkeeping blend. I reserve this blend for this purpose only, so when I do this activity, I actually feel good and look forward to it.

Sensory delights can be used to create a new feeling for something that you previously resisted or thought negatively of.

Another example is to get in the practice of putting on some fun or beautiful music when you’re doing chores like washing dishes, cooking, or cleaning. It sounds simple, but you’ll elevate the experience, create new memories and feelings, and feel beautiful about all areas of your life.

4. Nourish Your Body & Soul

This tip is non-negotiable, and it’s a pillar that I work on extensively with my Thyroid Yoga® clients and especially the moms who find their way to me when they’ve forgotten about their identity.

This means devoting time for self-nourishment: infrared sauna, detox baths, beautiful nourishing food, or a date with yourself doing exactly what YOU want to do.

Nourishment can be free, and spontaneous. It can be sitting down with the book you’ve been dying to read, or 5 minutes in a sunny chair doing nothing at all. It doesn’t have to come from another person, or require an appointment. The only requirement is that it fills you up.

When you feel worthy of taking this time for yourself, others will respond positively to your aura of self-worthiness and confidence. You become more attractive and grounded, versus depleted and exhausted, which are not beautiful qualities.

Self-care makes us shine from head to toe. You’ll never achieve the same glow from the outside alone. When you feel great, you act great. And there’s really nothing more magnetic than that.

5. Disconnect & Reflect

This is perhaps the hardest ritual for me to commit to, yet also the most profound on my relationships and success.

Disconnect & Reflect means tuck away your computer and phone an hour (at least!) before bed, and savor in a nightly ritual to ruminate about what you’re proud of instead of devising an often dreadful to-do list for the next day.

Up until very recently, I would stay up late working on my computer for hours until finally I’d roll into bed, still with a massive to-do list and unfinished articles and emails waiting for me. In the morning, I’d foggily awake from a less than satisfying sleep, looking the opposite of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and beautiful.

So to change the story, I changed my game. Now, instead of Instagram, emails, or plugging away on a never-ending list into the wee hours, I turn off my technology by 9:30 or 10pm, light candles, love myself up with restorative yoga poses, and– my favorite– write poetry with pen and paper in a gorgeous journal.

The best part is I wake up feeling divine. My skin and weight have totally changed, and I feel more fulfilled in all areas of my life. It’s so much fun, and entirely possible to fall in love with yourself over and over again.

If poetry’s not your thing, here’s another idea. Instead of writing on your to-do pad before bed, write a better list: 8 things I’m proud of myself for achieving today.

Write about the moments you stood up for yourself, expressed yourself with clarity, said no to a business opportunity that didn’t feel authentic, or fed yourself a beautiful nourishing meal.

Becoming grateful and aware of all of your wonderful milestones is beautiful. You’ll live from a place of confidence and fulfillment instead of a lack mentality. No one wants to surround themselves with those who are self-deprecating and living in a constant state of lack and scarcity.
